Domestic Violence

Thumbs Down! Domestic Violence Is a Jewish Problem

Sins of Omissions: The Jewish Community’s Reaction to Domestic Violence (Westview Press), by Carol Goodman Kaufman, describes the ignorance, denial, and consequent lack of response to domestic violence within the Jewish community. Legislation is currently pending in the Senate that would train volunteer attorneys to represent domestic violence victims, so women can safely leave their abusers. Jewish Women International (JWI) is sponsoring a nationwide petition drive in support of this potentially life-saving legislation. Make a difference during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Take action and sign the petition!

JWI’s Domestic Abuse Conference Seeks Workshop Proposals

Jewish Women International’s third international conference on domestic abuse in the Jewish Community, to be held Sunday, March 18-Tuesday, March 20, 2007 in Baltimore, will be a powerful gathering whose goal is to move beyond creating public awareness about the existence of domestic violence in the Jewish community by advancing knowledge and skill to create systemic change in our community. Workshops will be designed to accommodate participants with different skill levels. Deadline is July 15.

Jewish Women International

JWI, founded in 1897 as B'nai B'rith women, honors the concept of tikkun olam – repairing the world-through education, advocacy and action. Guided by a vision of a safe world for women and children, each of our anti-violence initiatives promotes the highest form of tzedakah by helping women and children become independent and help themselves. Looking forward, we see a new generation of women exploring their spirituality and invigorating our mothers' and grandmothers' organizational legacy with fresh ambition.

Mother’s Day Flower Project Assists Battered Women’s Shelters

Each Mother's Day, Jewish Women International delivers flowers to over 150 battered women's shelters across the United States as a gesture of support and encouragement to the thousands of women and their families who will spend this special day in a shelter.
